Unit Overview:

The purpose of this unit is to introduce learners to the concept of  “philanthropy” and how being philanthropic affects the public good as exemplified in the lives of famous people (sports heroes and celebrities) who have acted for the public good.  The learners will also discover how philanthropic acts affect the public good as well as reflect on their personal involvement in philanthropy.

Unit Purpose:

The learners will define philanthropy and determine how being philanthropic affects the public good as exemplified in the lives of famous people. The learners will identify philanthropists and their actions. They will apply this knowledge to recognize local philanthropists and the impact of their actions, and to identify acts of philanthropy they can do.

Unit Objectives:

The learner will:

  • define philanthropy and identify the benefits, of being philanthropic, for the common good.
  • identify philanthropic actions and their impact.
  • become familiar with people who have made contributions to the public good.
  • reflect on the possibility for future personal philanthropic actions.

Unit Assessment:

The assessment will focus on learner involvement in the activities, classroom discussion as well as their reflective writing.
