The learners will define and understand the meaning of the term “philanthropy” and describe the characteristics of a good citizen relative to democracy and to promoting the public/common good. The learners will review the Fundamental Democratic Principles and Beliefs of American Democracy that unite all Americans and promote the common good, and correlate character traits and philanthropic actions. The learners will discover and understand that they have roles to play as civic participants and that by doing so, they too can make a difference.
The learner will:
- describe and give examples of character traits representing good citizenship.
- explain that philanthropy is part of good citizenship, and is often exemplified through acts of kindness intended to promote the common good
- describe how citizenship relates to the Fundamental Democratic Principles and Beliefs.
- give examples of how the principles and beliefs promote the common good.
- graphically interpret each principle and belief.
- review the Fundamental Democratic Principles and Beliefs and the Top Ten Character Traits of an Awesome Citizen and reflect on how together, they impact the life of the learner, his/her community and nation for the common good.
- explore and discover the level of what he/she has access to and/or possesses.
- identify his/her present level of giving of time, talents and treasures for the common good and make a determination for his/her future giving on time, talents, and treasures.
The assessment will focus on learner involvement in the activities and classroom discussion as well as the depth of their reflective thinking and the quality of their completed assignments.
